Chocolate Raspberry Martini Cocktail

Combining two of my favorite flavors together in a cocltail was dangerous but OH SO GOOD too! This Chocolate Raspberry Martini is easy to make and to drink!

Chocolate Raspberry Martini

First things first. I know that some people are sticklers for convention and if a cocktail is called a martini it HAS to be one made with gin and vermouth. So calling this a Chocolate Raspberry Martini Cocktail is a sacrilege in their (Michael Ruhlman) eyes. I get that; I like tradition as much as the next guy.

But I also know that calling something a vodkatini sounds silly and the deal breaker for me is this. I buy glasses that are called martini glasses. I put this beverage in those glasses. Hence I think it’s appropriate to call any beverage I serve in them a martini. Sometimes a girl has to say, ‘ The heck with convention!’

Every year I host an event in my back yard I call Girls Nite In that brings together a gaggle of girlfriends. This year is no exception and in two weeks we’ll be here in my back yard with an assortment of good eats and some cocktails I’ve got planned.

I’ve known since the moment I made them that I would be serving the Limoncello Coolers I made a couple of weeks ago but I wanted another cocktail, something a bit richer and more of an after dinner/dessert drink. I’ve always loved a White Russian and have had many a late night sitting outside on the patio, listening to the pond gurgle, chatting with my daughter Lauren with that cocktail in hand.

This cocktail has some similarity except that I’ve replaced the Kahlua with my artisan (fancy word for homemade) Scharffenberger Chocolate Liqueur and added a bit of Chambord Raspberry Liqueur. Is it a girly girl drink? Maybe but I’ve had guys down them with vigor too; the type of vigor that requires they hand over their keys to me type vigor.

Chocolate Raspberry Martini

The single hardest thing about making this cocktail is coating a fresh raspberry halfway with chocolate. I tried lots of different way; when I used my fingers I ended up smooshing the berries. Trying to dip the skewer that I put them on was a mess…the weight of the chocolate had them sliding off into my bowl of chocolate.

To the rescue was my handy dandy kitchen tweezers. Imagine normal tweezers on steroids. Perfect. I can’t wait to make these for friends…you know who you are!

  1. Will let you know how the daughters-in law like this. Making it next Sunday for superbowl day. Of course I could try it before then, you know, just to make sure it’s good.

    1. HA! I was thinking last night of subbing something else and making a raspberry/chocolate dessert! I’ll have to surprise you I guess. PLEASE help me remember the sausage in the freezer, OK? SO good, I will find an excuse to keep it if at all possible. 🙂

  2. Only a little while to cocktail-thirty with one of these delicious libations! My favorite part is that you dipped the raspberries in the dark chocolate! Wow and YUM! Cheers!

    1. That was my favorite part too. Mostly because it was a lot of trial and error and I ate all of the errors. 🙂

    1. Thanks Jamie, I love that I have photos of my garden too, especially this morning after a terrible night and 3 different hailstorms. Of course I’m glad the tornadoes didn’t hit, that the hail didn’t break any windows and it wasn’t big enough to ruin vehicles parked outside but still, sobbing a bit at the devastation to my garden. The water was much needed and it could have been worse. That’s my mantra this morning! 🙂

    1. Glad I took some photos. Tough morning after a night of what seemed continuous hail; poor garden looks decidedly different. As in no flowers left to be seen. Only good news is it was small hail so plants are OK. We’ve had storms where the plants would be beaten completely to the ground; these just need a bit of recuperation time and hopefully I’ll have flowers again next week.

  3. Hi,
once again amazing cocktail recipe I see. 🙂 I think this is a wonderful combination, chocolate and raspberry, it can’t get any better. I like it! Have a nice day. 🙂

    1. Thank you again Danijela; I love the combination too. I’ve done it before with cheesecake and a pavlova…it was time for a cocktail, right?

    1. Chocolate and raspberry together is one of my favorite things…so I have can not lie, I loved this one a lot.

  4. Do I have to wait until Friday? hehe looks velvety and your garden is beautiful. I lived in TX for 13 years and a fine southern lady told me once that her back yard was not a yard it was a garden. he he It was! Left an impression wouldn’t you say?

PS if you would like my address I’m happy to receive an invite to your swaray he he

    1. There is a time and place isn’t there Jen? I like them too; not all the time but for a girls nite…well, I think they are a necessity!

  5. I honestly don’t know how I can live without this incredible dessert ‘martin’i right now. I wish I could join your Girls Night In, considering the food and drink that will be abundant, including these ‘martini’s’. By the way, dipping a rsapberry in melted chocolate IS a bitch. I temper the chocolate, it dips much easier with no smoosh or bleeding.

    1. I wish you could too. Seriously. The chocolate was actually about perfect but last night I took a step out of the Limoncello Cooler handbook that made a big difference. I froze them for 15-20 minutes. No smooshing and the chocolate hardened right away. Duh!! Going over to revise recipe now. Need directions? Colorado is west of you. 🙂

  6. I agree… calling something a vodkatini is silly. No thanks. This martini looks rad (yes, I said it)! I’m not usually one to go for a dessert cocktail (who needs the chocolate? just give me the booze!!!), but, for some weird reason, this is calling my name tonight. Maybe it’s because I’m a sucker for raspberries… yeah, I think that could be it.

    1. Even worse Brian? Did you know that the official name for a vodka/vermouth cocktail is a Kangaroo? Is is any wonder people refer to it as a vodka martini instead? I’ve been ordering vodka based cocktails for too many years that are called martinis to change now. Something about a Lemon Drop Kangaroo just doesn’t do it for me. 🙂

  7. The martinis I see in restaurants these days are not classic martinis, either. If you think it’s a martini, then it’s a martini. 😉 Now, pass me one of those glasses. I think I need to start my Friday early.

    1. I just think it’s silly to make a big deal out of it; much more important things to worry about in my world!

  8. Oh I know I would love this one!!! It’s so pretty too. I wish I lived in Denver, I’d be tempted to crash that lovely party you are having. Enjoy the gathering. I know your friends will certainly enjoy the food and drinks provided by an outstanding hostess.

    1. I said it on Twitter and will repeat…you are always welcome to my parties! And the best part of this party? We’re all food blogger so everyone is bring something; let’s me focus on the cocktails and we all get to sample such a variety of foods. One friend is Indian, another Hispanic…tamales and tandoori? 🙂
