Lemonade and Tequila Cocktail

Reminiscent of a margarita, the Lemonade and Tequila Cocktail is lighter and refreshing; a welcome drink in the heat of summer!

National Lemonade Day? Yes, May 4th this year but always the first Sunday of May. Always nice to have on a weekend when people might barbecue or picnic and perfect for this Lemonade and Tequila Cocktail.

Colorado is slow to come to Spring…when others have bulbs and trees simply bursting with blooms, even at the mile high altitude of Denver we’re still brown and chilly…and it takes until mid April to start to see a tiny difference; yeah, my crocus have bloomed! A difference though that holds enough of a challenge that one day could be a blizzard and the next an outdoor picnic.

As we move into the warmer months, it’s all outdoor living. I’ve got a great deck, friendly neighbors and if you add low humidity, cool nights, and no bugs months when my garden is in bloom, summer is the best. I grow flowers, herbs and tomatoes on my deck and every meal is eaten outdoors on my patio enjoying those fruits of my labor.

I’m also ready for those fun, lighter, fruity libations that summer calls for. This Lemonade and Tequila Cocktail is one of those. It could not be more simple; especially if you choose to to buy your lemonade and not squeeze your own. I do it too…but strongly suggest you start with a can of lemonade concentrate if that’s your decision; it is head and shoulders above anything in a bottle or other container.

I only wish I had discovered a Lemonade and Tequila Cocktail earlier in life; I do love my margaritas that combine tequila with citrus…but this is SO simple. It’s only four ingredients without requiring any specialty additions; even the glass is at your discretion.

  • Tequila
  • Lemonade
  • Lime Juice
  • Soda – ginger ale, ginger beer, or a 7-Up type beverage

I can’t take credit for this one though; the folks at Hornitos Tequila asked if I would like to feature their recipe and now I will love them forever.

I used their Hornitas Plata, it’s a straightforward, unaged tequila, very crisp with that trademark tequila “kick,” with an almost medicinal note that doesn’t make for great sipping in my opinion, but is great for mixing and was a fine choice for this lemonade.

Making cocktails at home and having friends over for drinks might become the new normal…I can’t believe how much restaurants are charging for cocktails. I can’t do it when I can make an entire batch for a crowd for the same amount…stay home and invite your buddies over and sip!

Definitely some of the same elements you’ll find in my favorite margarita but still so different and so very good. It’s only April and I’m ready for a great, easy, summer drink…this is it! Wont’ you join me?

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces Tequila
  • 1 ½ ounces Lemonade Use concentrate mixed with water per product instructions, or see notes to make homemade lemonade.
  • ½ ounce Lime Juice
  • 1 ½ ounces Ginger Beer or Ginger Ale, or 7-up

Instructions

  • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add the tequila, lemonade and lime juice and shake until ice cold.
  • Fill a Collins glass with ice; pour the contents of the shaker over the ice and top with your choice of soda.
  • Stir. Garnish with a lemon slice and be sure to include a straw!

Notes

Use any lemonade you want but if you want to make your own like I did it’s easy. This makes about 8 (1 cup) servings.
  • 1 ¾ cups white sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup lemon juice (about 10 medium lemons)
  • 7 cups ice-cold water
  • ice as needed
  1. Combine sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan. Stir to dissolve sugar while mixture comes to a boil. Set aside to cool slightly.
  2. Meanwhile, roll lemons around on your counter to soften. Cut in half crosswise, and squeeze into a liquid measuring cup. Add pulp to the juice, but discard any seeds. Continue juicing until you have 1 1/2 cups fresh juice and pulp.
  3. Pour 7 cups ice-cold water into a pitcher. Stir in lemon juice and pulp, then add simple syrup to taste. Add ice.

    1. I agree…especially Margarita Day which is in the winter. I mean I love the idea of Margarita Day but it is a summer libation if ever there was one!

    1. The only negative thing about it is that it is SO refreshing I could have downed the glass in seconds. Uh oh…wait a minute Barb; there is BOOZE in this!

    1. That would work for me…well maybe not everyday because I sure love Limeade too! You have to try this one; we just loved it!
