Homemade Apple Pie Spice
Don’t bother with a new bottle of spice from the market, it’s easy to make your own Homemade Apple Pie Spice combining spices in your pantry!

I love baking and cooking and cocktail making and I always try to imagine something new and delicious…but maybe sometimes I need to think more basic, with recipes like this combination for Homemade Apple Pie Spice. Often it is at the urging of friends that I put together a post with those basics and that is true of this one today.
A neighbor is making and selling the most amazing sourdough loaves of bread. While she has the requisite ‘regular’ sourdough, I have become enamored of her flavored ones, most specifically the cheddar/jalapeno, the garlic/rosemary, and my new favorite, her blueberry/lemon loaf.

When another neighbor joined me for coffee, I toasted a couple of slices of the blueberry/lemon version, slathered on some great butter, and sprinkled it with a spiced sugar that is our favorite; combining sugar with apple pie spice instead of just cinnamon. For her it was a revelation, for me rather ordinary…and yes, she pushed me to include my ‘recipe’ which uses basic spices most keep in their pantry.
What are those spices? I know what I like but ingredients can be diverse depending on your taste but typically Homemade Apple Pie Spice will always include cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice; some also include a bit of ginger or cloves, so add a bit of those if you like.
Of course Apple Pie Spice is a favorite use for, well, apple pies. But I also love apple pie spice combined with sugar and sprinkled on an English Muffin in the morning; I’ll also sprinkle some of the same sugar mixture on buttered popcorn…yummy! I grew up with cinnamon sugar; this sugar is better!

Need fun ideas for gifts? My neighbors love it when I present them with something homemade. I like to share spice mixes like this Homemade Apple Pie Spice using small Quilted Ball Jars. Simply wrap a ribbon around the lid and they are perfect for teacher gifts or thank yous.
Make it for friends or make it for yourself; but don’t stress about buying a new spice…you’ve already got it!
