This Fresh Orange Frosty Beverage is even better than an Orange Julius; it’s made with fresh orange juice and vanilla ice cream!
First things first. I’ve made a drink without booze in it. Monumental right? But of course there is a story to my madness that I will share because it sure doesn’t happen often!
If it’s the last Tuesday of the month, then it’s time for Progressive Eats, the monthly food and drink extravaganza where my friends and I share a virtual event that mimics the Progressive Dinners of old when participants would go from home to home to enjoy a different course at each location. I have a lovely friend who I have known forever in Socialmediaworld who recently published her first cookbook and it’s all about oranges. So I thought what better to feature than a recipe from Jamie Schler’s book ‘Orange Appeal – Savory and Sweet’ on this day devoted to all things citrus.
I did a recipe from Jamie’s book a couple of months ago and it was a smashing hit. It was one of those desserts that was so good I had some moments of wishing I had not invited my neighbors to join me and had saved this luscious Orange Cake all for myself. My hips though are still thanking me for my generosity.
Jamie’s book is filled with items both Savory and Sweet; as a matter of fact I was a contributor for her book and shared this recipe for a Quinoa Salad with Oranges, Pecans and Cranberries…it is so good, it started my love affair with quinoa. This time around it was time again for a savory treat but…who am I kidding? I love making desserts and had carefully curated her book to find the perfect thing. I had set aside the time and was ready to get to work Saturday morning on some adorable orange tartlettes with a coconut crust. I am the type that lives by ‘mise en place’ and was getting all of my ingredients ready when…really? No coconut? I mean really? I had just shared on Facebook that a neighbor had called needing some chicken bouillon and of course I had four different types, how on earth did I run out of coconut. No shredded. No flakes. Nothing!
Once I gathered myself and was ready to punt I needed something I could now accomplish in a shorter time frame; something that would not require a grocery trip. It might have been near the end of the book but it was still my saving grace and honestly I loved this Fresh Orange Frosty Beverage so much I think this misdirection was meant to be. I’ve always loved the combination of vanilla ice cream and orange…remember Orange Creamsicles? Always my favorite as a kid; this is even better.
They are Jamie’s dad’s version of that popular beverage which I discovered is no longer a stand alone business; wow it has been awhile. They’re now owned by Dairy Queen! I guess it has been a long time; it was a lifetime ago when I remember taking my kids to a mall now long gone for a treat in the summer. Now I’m excited that I can create my own whenever I want. I also cannot wait to have the kidlets on my street come visit me; how could they not love this?
Jamie’s recipe called for using either frozen concentrate and water or fresh squeezed orange juice. With a large basket of beautiful Cara Cara oranges on my counter (notice how my drink is the slightest bit pink – that’s why!), it’s understandable why I went that direction…and you should too. Absolutely out of this world. Or was it following the lead of Jamie’s son and adding some vanilla ice cream to the mix? Oh, OK, maybe it was that too! It was my idea to top it with some whipped cream and a cherry…ice cream makes that a requirement, right?
Altogether it made for a wonderfully refreshing treat. I cannot lie; given the right time and place I might be convinced to slip some vodka into the mix; old habits die hard!
